2011 Bridge Conference: Connect. Act. TrasformThe 2011 Bridge Conference is a very special opportunity to hear about the current efforts of the Forum for Youth Investment and the REady by 21 framework and have access to a nationally renowned leader in the field of afterschool and youth development.
Karen Pittman, this year's opening speaker, will share how community leaders can mobilize to "change the odds for youth by changing the way we do business." She will explore outcome measurement in an era filled with high expectations to articulate program effectiveness and the impacts on youth. Karen will also talk about racial equity, accountability and access in the context of effective partnerships and services offered to youth both in and out of school.

NC CAP United 500 Afterschool Stakeholders for Their Largest Conference to Date!
On March 3-4, over 500 afterschool practitioners, directors, funders, state level administrators and community leaders convened in Greensboro for NC CAP's annual statewide afterschool conference, SYNERGY. The event featured two days of workshops, a special briefing session for the school-age community college faculty, engaging keynote speakers, networking opportunities and a special Quality Afterschool Forum. SYNERGY 2011 focused on the theme of program sustainability, including professional development on fundraising, grant-writing, advocacy and partnership building.

The Minnesota Department of Education produced a report outlining the federal and state funding streams for out of school time in Minnesota. The report attempts to provide information about which funding streams are dedicated to afterschool and out of school time programs and which funding streams allow for these expenditures. Quality Task Force
Youth Community Connections convened experts and key stakeholders to examine what systems-level supports were necessary to encourage and promote quality programming in afterschool, out-of-school time and summer. Cost Study
Youth Community Connections (YCC) released the findings from the statewide cost study on afterschool programs in Minnesota. This study examined the full costs of providing afterschool programs in urban, suburban and rural areas of the state. Maryland Out-of-School Time Programs' Quality Standards Framework
Published by the Maryland Out of School Time Network in July 2009, this report describes Maryland's quality framework structure. The report is broken into seven Foundational Areas (FA), which are essential elements of program quality improvement. Maryland Out of School Time Network: Guidance on the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
On February 17, 2009 President Obama signed the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) into law bringing a much needed injection of dollars to the states. The ARRA provides a relatively proscribed framework for how the dollars should be used and how they flow from federal agencies to state agencies and down to local jurisdictions. Over the next two years, Maryland will recieve at least $3.8 billion dollars from the stimulus package for items like construction projects, education and workforce development. The Afterschool Investment Project
The Afterschool Investment Project, a collaboration with the Finance Project and the Child Care Bureau, has released a new strategy brief entitled, Promoting Health and Fitness in Afterschool Settings: Strategies for Program Leaders and Policymakers. Aimed at reducing childhood obesity through more active and nutritional programming at afterschool programs, the strategy brief also addresses how to fund these programs as well as increase policy support for this kind of programming. The Afterschool Investment Project is also unveiling a new web resource called FitSource which will be searchable by various phrases like, “games,” “information for parents” or “recipes.” Programs can use this resource as a way to easily incorporate new ideas into their programming, enhancing the fitness and nutrition of their programs. The emphasis will be on low-cost or no-cost ideas.

Rhode Island's Urban Education Task Force Report Released
To address the many challenges within the Rhode Island educational context, Governor Donald Carcier created the Urban Education Task Force in January of 2008 and charged the Task Force to work with multiple stakeholders to forge a plan to generate action and the political will needed to take the first steps towards implementation. In October of 2009, the results of the Task Force's work was published.

Rhode Island After School Plus Alliance: Program Cost Calculator
RIASPA has developed a cost calculator for afterschool programs in Rhode Island. The cost calculator formulates the cost of running an afterschool program based on information entered. The cost calculator was created by Augenblich, Palaich and Associates based on input from a professional judgment panel made up of afterschool program directors. This is a great tool for programs, not only as a way to project future costs but also to show potential funders the viability of your program. The national network of statewide afterschool networks brings together established statewide afterschool networks in their collective mission to build partnerships and policies that are committed to the development and sustainability of quality afterschool programs.
These partnerships funded through the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and other funders are focused on actively engaging key decisionmakers in support of school-based/school-linked afterschool programs, particularly in underserved communities. Currently 39 statewide afterschool networks are funded to coordinate and influence the systems that support the success of children and young people.
