National City Afterschool Summit
May 12 - 14, 2008
Washington, DC

Join mayors, city council members, senior municipal staff, school board members and school superintendents from across the nation for this exciting learning and networking opportunity.

Municipal leaders who attend will learn how partnerships with schools to expand afterschool options for children and youth can serve as a key strategy for improving public safety and education. Participants will also explore leadership strategies for strengthening citywide systems of high-quality afterschool programs, learn about city-state partnerships that generate funding for local afterschool efforts and meet with congressional representatives to discuss the importance of afterschool programs in their communities.

Afterschool for All Challenge

The Afterschool Alliance and the National League of Cities will host the Afterschool for All Challenge in Washington, D.C. The event will include two days of workshops, speakers, advocacy opportunities and fun for hundreds of afterschool providers and leaders from around the country and some of the parents and children they serve. Financing and Sustaining Out-of-School Time Programs in Rural Communities
Leaders of rural out-of-school time programs need to act strategically to ensure the long-term success of their initiatives. This brief describes the funding landscape and highlights the unique resource challenges confronting rural out-of-school time programs. It also describes various public and private resources that can support out-of-school time programming and identifies effective strategies that can be used by program leaders to create sustainable approaches to their work. Using CDBG to Support Community-Based Youth Programs
This brief aims to provide policymakers, stakeholders, community leaders, and program developers working in or with community-based youth programs with a basic understanding of how the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is structured, how community-based youth programs fit into CDBG purposes and activities, and how communities nationwide are using CDBG to support youth initiatives. The William T. Grant Foundation Announces Important Findings on
After-School Programs

The William T. Grant Foundation announces a new report from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). In the report, researchers Joseph Durlak of Loyola University Chicago and Roger Weissberg of the University of Illinois at Chicago show that youth who participate in after-school programs that use evidence-based approaches to enhance personal and social skills show significant improvement when compared to their peers.


The national network of statewide afterschool networks brings together established statewide afterschool networks in their collective mission to build partnerships and policies that are committed to the development and sustainability of quality afterschool programs.

These partnerships funded through the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and other funders are focused on actively engaging key decisionmakers in support of school-based/school-linked afterschool programs, particularly in underserved communities. Currently 38 statewide afterschool networks are funded to coordinate and influence the systems that support the success of children and young people.
