New Jersey School-Age Care Coalition

The New Jersey School-Age Care Coalition (NJSACC) promotes and supports the development, continuity and expansion of quality programs for children and youth during out-of-school time (OST). As NJ's Statewide Afterschool Network, NJSACC works to build lasting public support for quality afterschool programs across New Jersey.

Accomplishments:

Policy-Related:

  • Our big policy goal continues to be the OST Commission which we hope will pass this year.  On April 15, 2015 NJSACC held our Mayoral Summit (funded by National League of Cities) with the Honorable Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, NJ.

  • We also continue to work with the NJ Department of Agriculture to ease common challenges related to becoming an afterschool or summer meal sponsor.

Sustainability-Related:

  • New state funding in 2015: NJ Afterschool and Summer program is a $1 million line in the NJ Department of Education budget. Grantees should be announced in May 2015. We hope to grow this funding in the coming years.

Quality-Related:

  •  NJSACC released the Spanish-language version of the NJ Quality Standards for Afterschools.

  • NJ’s 21st CCLC grantees must all use the Self-Assessment tool annually.

  • The QSA was also included in our evaluation work with Newark Public Schools.

Other Work:

  • NJSACC has partnered with NIOST and the National Writing Project to offer the National Afterschool Matters STEM Practitioner Fellowship.
Current Projects and Initiatives:
  • Statewide Training and Technical assistance (contract with NJ Department of Human Services) to afterschool programs statewide.

  • 21st CCLC Training and Technical Assistance (contract with NJ Department of Education): NJSACC provides training and TA to NJ’s 50 21st CCLC grantees.

  • Training and Technical Assistance (grant from Fund for Newark’s Future): NJSACC provides training, TA and data collection and analysis services to Newark Public School’s system of afterschool programming.

  • STEM: NJSACC offers STEM trainings throughout the year. We are the NJ state affiliate of the National Girls STEM Collaborative. In 2014-2015, NJSACC is partnering with NIOST and the National Writing Project to offer the  National Afterschool Matters STEM Practitioner Fellowship. We plan to hold our Noyce STEM Systems building event in June 2015.

  • Afterschool and Summer Meals: Our work in this area has greatly expanded thanks to funding from the National League of Cities and Walmart Foundation. In partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, NJSACC is hosting two AmeriCorps VISTA members to work on expanding afterschool and summer meals in Newark and Jersey City, NJ. We also provide technical assistance to programs statewide. With support from the Walmart Foundation, NJSACC offered a competitive mini-grant program to help afterschool programs with “startup costs” to becoming a CACFP sponsor.
