Tennessee Afterschool Network

The mission of the Tennessee Afterschool Network is to support children, youth, families and communities by advocating and building capacity with a unified voice for sustainable investments in safe, healthy and nurturing afterschool experiences.

Accomplishments: 
  • The Tennessee Afterschool Network secured funding to help launch the network.

  • Obtained a Governor's proclamation recognizing the 2014 Lights On Afterschool.

  • Held a celebration of its launch and Lights On Afterschool at the capitol in October 2014.

  • The Tennessee Afterschool Network held a Day on the HIll in February 2015 where every legislator received a visit with information about the network.

  • Received a grant for 2016 to work on common core/academic standards, with a focus on aligning afterschool programs with standards.

  • Developed an afterschool track for the state Volunteerism and Service Learning Conference.

Current Projects and Initiatives: 
  • The Tennessee Afterschool Network is working on developing state standards.

  • The network is conducting at least a dozen community conversations around challenges and strategies to better align afterschool with academic standards.

  • The network is planning at least a dozen locations of events for a summer learning/day of action, focusing on nutrition/activity and reading.

  • At the state's June conference on extended learning, the network will have a networking reception with a passionate, high-profile speaker and will continue to recruit more members.

  • The Tennessee Afterschool Network is working with their White-Riley-Peterson Fellow on a mapping survey to assess availability of services and an analysis of policy agendas from across the state to help identify gaps and opportunities.
