Supporting Student Success: A Governors Guide to Extra Learning Opportunities

To better ensure student achievement, help youth develop essential workforce skills and support families and communities, governors are increasingly implementing comprehensive and coordinated state policies that support high-quality before- and after-school programs.

The National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices has released a new guide detailing a host of these programs, also known as Extra Learning Opportunities (ELOs), available to governors and states. The report, Supporting Student Success: A Governors Guide to Extra Learning Opportunities, highlights many of the more successful state ELOs and makes recommendations for governors and other interested policymakers to consider. For more information on the report, please visit the National Governors Association website.

The national network of statewide afterschool networks brings together established statewide afterschool networks in their collective mission to build partnerships and policies that are committed to the development and sustainability of quality afterschool programs.

These partnerships — funded through the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and other funders — are focused on actively engaging key decisionmakers in support of school-based/school-linked afterschool programs, particularly in underserved communities. Currently 25 statewide afterschool networks are funded to coordinate and influence the systems that support the success of children and young people.
